Parquet flooring is a beautiful decorative form of flooring made from blocks of woods woven into a mosaic of geometric patterns. These patterns that make up parquet can range from simple geometric shapes, like squares through to highly intricate and decorative designs. Some names given to these patterns are checkerboard, herring bone, double herring bone and basket weave. Parquet is available as single solid wood blocks or in a mosaic-panel. The single parquet blocks are available in a variety of sizes, woods and grades. These loose blocks are individually laid into the desired pattern for example herring-bone or basket-weave.
The parquet blocks are generally cheaper to buy but are more expensive to fit and finish than a plank floor. Mosaic-panel parquet is factory made panels where the parquet blocks have been arranged into their pattern already and are held in place by a paper or mesh backing.
Oak is possibly the most popular wood but walnut, maple, wenge, cherry, teak, mahogany and beech also create beautiful parquet floors. Parquet is glued to a very clean and even sub base, then sanded and sealed on site, so it is quite a procedure, but the final product is well worth it.
They are easy to maintain and are far more hygienic than fitted carpets. With the proper care and attention, your parquet floor will last a lifetime.
Wooden floors these days are extremely fashionable adding tremendous value to any home, significantly so with parquet. Estate agents state that “homes with wooden floors sell twice as easily as those without”.
